Tangible, touchable star quality
REVIEW
T.K. Musical Theatre’s production of Disney’s High School Musical On Stage.
Based on the original movie written by Peter Barsocchini.
On at Forum North’s Capitaine Bougainville Theatre until March 20.
Reviewer: Emily Kernot
Second row back, I’m surrounded by an audience with an average age of, oh, 8 maybe.
They’re singing loud, too . . .and it sounds amazing.
This is Disney’s High School Musical on stage, an adapted dancing/singing version of the original movie and Whangarei, you’re doing it with the professionalism a world-known production deserves.
Admittedly, this is a performance geared towards an age group which oozes wide-eyed innocence.
But I’m reminded that it’s this particular age group needing strong role models and stars to admire, and here they have them in spades; tangible, touchable.
Director Gayle Dowsett has pulled off a near faultless production; careful casting, charismatic choreography and compelling acoustics.
Lead actors Toby Morris and Sophie Sparrow as Troy and Gabriella are suited to a T with their sweetheart duets and awkward holding-hands moments.
Mention should also be made to The Jocks singing Getcha Head in the Game; consider creating an a cappella group once the final bow is taken, gentlemen, there’s power in those vocal chords.
Act One ended all too soon and during the break when Miss Four scooted past saying ‘‘Daddy, I really, really, really, really like it’’ I couldn’t have agreed more. This is a polished performance and the hours rehearsing have been well spent to get the end result, nothing short of excellent.
My only suggestion would be to increase the mic volume when Cohan Bryers’ saxophone solo happens; he was drowned out after the first few notes.
Fathers take your daughters; mothers take your sons . . . or go as a family — if your children love the movie they’ll be in awe seeing it live.
